STANLEY Security Case Studies

West Kent College has around 2,300 full-time students, 12,800 part-time students and employs 638 staff. It is based in Tonbridge and is a partner college of the University of Greenwich for undergraduate courses and the University of Leicester for postgraduate and professional courses.

The Requirement

The Disability Discrimination Act states that all public buildings have a duty to provide reasonable adjustments for anyone with a disability, including hearing impairment. This includes educational establishments and, in the case of West Kent College, required the introduction of a system that would ensure that hearing impaired students or visitors were alerted in the case of a fire alarm being activated.

The Solution

STANLEY provided West Kent College with Saffire Fire pagers that are fully integrated with the existing fire alarm system and meet the recommendations of BS5839-1. Students who are hearing impaired carry the pagers, which have functions such as vibrate, visual alert and text messaging, whenever they are on the
College’s main campus.

The pagers link directly to the fire alarm system so that in the event of any fire alarm going off, the pagers will
vibrate, flash and bleep to alert the carrier to evacuate the building immediately. The pager will also display an alphanumeric message.

The College has 30 paging units, which are carried predominantly by students; a number of spare units are also kept for any visitors who may require them. The pagers cover an average sized campus, encompassing five individual blocks.”
