STANLEY Security Case Studies

Sheffield University is one of the UK’s leading universities being placed within the top 10. The university has more than 23,000 students and 5,500 staff.

The Requirement

As a provider of further education Sheffield University has a legal obligation to comply with the guidelines and
legislation of the BS5839 Fire Prevention Guidelines, Special Educational Needs & Disability Act, Disability Discrimination Act and European Employment Directive that cover the equal treatment of people with disabilities, whether they be employees or students.

In order to meet this obligation Sheffield University required a system that would enable them to meet their responsibilities for ensuring that the deaf and hard of hearing receive adequate warning during emergencies.

The Solution

STANLEY installed Saffire, a radio-based emergency messaging system, which allows deaf and hard of
hearing staff, students and visitors to receive adequate warning during emergencies.

The solution, incorporated 24 systems across 26 buildings to provide comprehensive coverage across
the campus. Therefore, a warning will be received wherever a person is within those buildings.

Saffire is linked to the fire alarm system, so that when a fire alarm is activated an automatic warning will be
sent to the portable pagers worn by deaf people. This alerts them through vibrating and text messaging, enabling them to make a safe and quick evacuation.
